Marketing Director Mark Bevans gives us his third and final social bigwig to be put under the job seeking microscope. Twitter knocked it out the park and LinkedIn remained top of the job hunting tables, so how well will Facebook fare? Let’s get down to it!

As social giants go, Facebook takes the cake. There’s no doubting it dominates its fellow social favourites in terms of users but how does it stand up next to the likes of LinkedIn and Twitter in the job hunting stakes? Well, not too shoddy at all.

In many ways Facebook is the best suited social channel to job seeking as it’s in tune with the shape of modern recruitment. Let’s look at the facts;

  1. Most jobs come from referrals - And which channel has the highest volume of supportive friends, family and connections? Facebook.
  2. The bigger the talent pool, the more opps available - And which channel has the highest volume of users? Facebook.
  3. Research is key to finding the right jobs/employers - And which channel connects you with your fave brands and dream companies with one Like click. Facebook.

Nab that dream job on Facebook today - A job seeker’s guide to success.

Yep, Facebook’s case is looking pretty darn fantastic so let’s get to the nitty gritty. As a job seeker, how can you use this nifty network master the hunt for your opportunity?

  • Get real face time with your dream companies.

One thing FB is great for is connecting beyond a click. Facebook is one of the only networks that gives seekers a trail to follow (Click to Tweet), a path from company to managers to employees. And more than just names and faces, it presents a human identity and a person flaws and all. And that’s what people can connect with. This network is complex but crazy useful, there’s always a way or person that can lead you to the people you need to speak to.

  • Research heaven.

From company connections to culture, Facebook gives job seekers an infinite web of research potential (Click to tweet) Everything you need to know about values, competitors, employee happiness, social literacy and brand popularity is a Like away. Don’t waste this opportunity to get under the skin of what makes your dream companies tick. Be sure to not let this info go to waste, cater your own feed to their personality and culture. A match is what you’re after.

  • Be up front.

It’s human nature for people to want to help. Use your connections and this desire to get your ‘looking for a job’ message. Balance is everything if you decide to go down this route. If you’re currently employed, this ain’t going to end well so reserve this move for unemployed endeavours only. Asking for an introduction can be just as impactful if used correctly so keep your social etiquette in check.

  • Profile perfection.

It goes without saying that keeping profiles free of swearing, mad night out pics and all mischief in between is a must. As with all social profiles, having a complete and updated one is key. Use your About sections in a similar vein as you would a LinkedIn summary, mixing personal and professional (education and employment). Use your Privacy Settings, that’s what they are there for.

  • Post well.

As with all your social shenanigans, your value is emphasised by your content. You have your own culture to showcase and FB is the perfect place to do just that. Create Facebook Groups, share videos, post industry relevant articles, accept invitations to events  and participate in interactions. Don’t be tempted to get lazy and resort to your old ‘sit back and spy’ ways. Make Facebook a work tool as well as a social one. Be strategic in your posts, tailoring your posts to touch on your job search adventure.

  •  Join groups galore.

This is networking in action. Whether alumni groups, job search groups or common interest groups, get in there and be part of what’s happening. As a seeker, you want to be a familiar face and active part of the Facebook culture so plant yourself in these avenues. Who knows what connections you could make.

  • Use your FB cover photo.

Your cover photo isn’t just an artistic opp seekers. This is one of the first things any visitor will see when they arrive at your profile. Use this space properly. Why not add an infographic resume, portfolio examples or even a link to your blog or LinkedIn? Don’t miss any opportunity to get yourself noticed.

  • Get app-ed up.

There’s always a new search tool in the pipeline so make it your business to be fluent in them. From BeKnown and BranchOut to InCircle, get to grips with these tools and be seen to be using them. Future employers will see you as a savvy, invested candidate so it’s win win.

  • Create a job search Business Page.

This isn’t a solution for every job seeker out there, it needs to be used in keeping with your personal brand and dream job. Putting a ‘hire me’ page out there for the world to see can appear to be a little desperate if not done in the right tone or manner. Not only are FB’s Business Pages searchable by Google, but they can help you target the companies you hope to reach in a memorable way.

Facebook’s been putting in some pretty serious thinking into how to welcome recruitment to the party. For the last few years it’s bridged the gap between professional and personal, naturalising how candidates are attracted and researched and offering employers a new means to peek under the CV surface. And their approach to job seekers is getting better with each and every Like. Stay tuned folks, Facebook is making its way up the ranks with candidate clout.
