Top 4 unexpected ways to supercharge recruitment and retention

Written by Logic Melon | Jan 1, 2019 12:00:00 AM

Chances are you've just about had your fill when it comes to blogs about recruitment and retention.

After all, how many ways are there to say "pay staff more, make them feel loved and bump them up that career ladder"?

That's why we've prepped this awesome list of recruitment and retention techniques you've probably never even thought of:

Perk up!

Snacks, gym memberships and the like have their place, but they've also grown a little stale.

So, take a leaf outta Google's book and think about some extra perks that could make your employees' lives that little bit easier, like:

  • Nap pods
  • Bike repair
  • Exercise classes
  • Hairdressers
  • Car/segway rental

Some of these will ramp up productivity straight away. But, the rest are about giving those folks downstairs The Full Monty of life admin capabilities.

After all, if they're loving life, why would they want to go anywhere else?

Being a big kid

Business is getting less buttoned-up. The memo's done the rounds - you can be smart and productive, but still have a little fun along the way.

These are just some of the things that can inject a little fun into your office:

  • Games consoles and arcades
  • Foosball tables, pinball, air-hockey etc.
  • Funky furniture and fittings
  • Slides not stairs, beanbags not chairs

Now, your staff can't spend all day mindlessly twiddling away. But, when the chips are down, the chance to blow off some steam will help them stamp out stress and come back with uber-productivity.

Looking after the little 'uns

When it comes to kids, you should think about making it easier for staff to take time off to look after their tiny tots.

Maternity leave isn't great, but it's a start. Paternity leave allowances, in comparison, tend to be downright stingy.

The odd antenatal appointment here and there, plus a couple of weeks off (perhaps unpaid) when the little 'un's born is pretty much all you can hope for.

But, in 2017, it's now pretty common for families to arrange life differently. Maybe one of you has a better job, or is keener to get stuck into parenting, regardless of your gender.

Revamping your paternity package and being that super-generous employer now might just win you years of loyalty in return.

So, that's the serious stuff covered. But, if you wanna go all in, give them 'peternity' leave so they can care for their pooches and moggies. Sounds funny, but 48% of UK workers already do it.

A breath of fresh air

Remember, there's a whole world out there.

Well, unfortunately it looks like most office workers don't. Hardly any spend even an hour outside on the days they're working.

64% of UK workers reckon the lack of minutes they spend in the great outdoors is a dampener on their mood, while 35% actively take this factor into account when looking for work.

Of course, they've gotta do their jobs. But, see if you can figure out a way of getting them outside to soak up that fresh air and vitamin D.

Their morale will go through the roof, and you'll get more out of them in both the short and long term.
